| Obverse description | Central field occupied by the elaborate arms of Pope Innocent XI (Benedetto Odescalchi), consisting of a baroque cartouche-style shield divided into two horizontal registers: the upper register bearing a displayed eagle with spread wings, and the lower register bearing a rampant lion passant; below the shield a third register displays three rows of roundels (cups). The escutcheon is flanked by ornate foliate scrollwork and surmounted by the papal tiara and crossed keys of Saint Peter, symbols of pontifical authority. The circular Latin legend runs along the periphery, interrupted by pellet stops, reading INNOCEN·XI· ·PONT·M·A·IX·, identifying the pontiff and his ninth year of reign. The coin exhibits fine milled borders. |
