Obverse description Central field displays the papal arms of Innocent XI — a baroque cartouche-shaped shield bearing an eagle displayed in chief above a rampant lion, with three mounts in base — surmounted by the papal tiara and flanked by the crossed keys of Saint Peter, one ornate key visible on each side. The shield is framed by elaborate foliate scrollwork. The circular legend INNOCENTIVS • XI • PONT • MAX • runs along the periphery, separated from the inner design by a toothed border of fine milling.
