| Reverse description | The reverse presents a bold all-text design within an ornate Baroque cartouche formed by intertwining foliate and strapwork scrolls, knotted at the top and bottom. Within this decorative frame the five-word Latin motto MELIVS / EST DARE / QVAM / ACCIPERE is inscribed in four lines of raised capital letters across the recessed field, translating as 'It is better to give than to receive' (Acts 20:35), a motto closely associated with the charitable ideals of Pope Innocent XI. The cartouche is surrounded by a plain inner field and enclosed by the same prominent milled rim as the obverse. |
