| Obverse description | The arms of Cardinal Giovanni Battista Spinola occupy the central field, displayed beneath the papal umbrella (umbraculum) and the crossed keys of Saint Peter, all surmounted by a draped canopy with tasselled cords arranged symmetrically to either side. The escutcheon bears the Spinola family device of a checky pattern, set upon an ornate baroque cartouche. The circular legend surrounding the composition reads SEDE VACANTE MDCC, denoting the interregnal vacancy of 1700. The coin's broad milled border frames the entire composition with a fine toothed rim characteristic of late seventeenth-century Roman minting. |
