Obverse description Central field dominated by the oval papal arms of Clement VIII (Aldobrandini), displaying the family coat of arms charged with a bend and six stars, surmounted by the crossed keys of Saint Peter in saltire and the pontifical tiara above. The shield is set within a decorative cartouche. The encircling peripheral legend in Latin reads CLE VIII PONT MAX, identifying the pontiff as Clement VIII, Supreme Pontiff. The coin exhibits the characteristic irregular flan and bold relief typical of late sixteenth-century hammered papal silver coinage.
