Additional information

Shams al-Din Kayumarth ruled over a remote hill territory in the Kulu-Kangra region and was never a sultan of Delhi proper — his Tanka issues bearing sultanate-style nomenclature reflect the complex tributary and imitative coinage practices of northern Indian hill chiefs during the late 13th century. Whether this piece was struck with formal sanction from Delhi or represents a local appropriation of sultanate monetary forms is a question the numismatic literature has not definitively resolved.
