Additional information

Nasir al-Din Mahmud Shah III inherited the Gujarat Sultanate at a moment of acute external pressure — the Portuguese had entrenched themselves along the Gujarati coastline, and the Mughal empire under Humayun was probing eastward. His reign was less a period of consolidation than of managed survival, dependent on shifting alliances with the Rajput chiefs and periodic accommodation with powers he could not militarily dislodge. The sultanate's silver coinage continued uninterrupted through these decades, a function of Gujarat's commercial wealth rather than political stability.

Mahmud Shah III died in 1554, the last sultan to exercise any meaningful independent authority before Akbar extinguished the dynasty entirely in 1572.
