Mahmud Shah II ruled Malwa during its terminal decline — the sultanate was caught between the expanding Sultanate of Gujarat to the west and the Lodi Sultanate to the north, with Mahmud spending much of his reign as a political pawn between them. Gujarat's Muzaffar Shah II effectively reduced Malwa to a client state during this period. The sultanate would fall entirely to Gujarat in 1531, roughly a decade after this issue's production ended.
Malwa tankās of this period are struck on broad, thin flans characteristic of the Sultanate's silver coinage tradition inherited from the Delhi Sultans.
