Additional information

The Malwa Sultanate's billon tankās from the reign of Mahmud Shah I reflect a prolonged period of political consolidation in central India, during which Malwa maintained genuine independence against persistent pressure from both the Bahmani Sultanate to the south and the Lodi Sultanate pressing from the north. Mahmud Shah I's reign of over two decades was among the longest in Malwa's history, which accounts for the relative availability of his issues compared to shorter-reigning predecessors.

Billon content in Malwa coinage varied considerably across this reign, and individual pieces differ noticeably in silver percentage.
