Obverse description Central field dominated by the crowned Portuguese royal arms, consisting of the quartered shield with the quinas (five escutcheons) of Portugal and the castles of the Kingdom of the Algarve, set within a beaded inner border. The letter 'G' appears to the left of the shield and 'A' to the right, serving as mint and assayer marks respectively for the Goa mint. The crown above the shield is rendered in a bold, stylized hammered style characteristic of Portuguese colonial coinage of the mid-17th century. The overall design is contained within a beaded circular border.
