Obverse description The Portuguese Royal Arms, surmounted by a crown, occupies the central field within a plain shield. The quartered escutcheon displays the traditional arms of Portugal with the quintas and castles arranged in the characteristic Royal style. The mint initials G and A flank the shield to the left and right respectively. A beaded border encircles the design, with a partial circular legend visible around the periphery.

Reverse description A standing figure of Saint Philip (São Filipe), depicted in full length holding a tall cross or staff at his left side, occupies the central field. The initials S and F, abbreviating São Filipe, appear to the left and right of the figure in the mid-field. The date is divided across the lower portion of the field, split as 16 and 40 (or the relevant year), flanking the lower part of the saint's figure. A beaded border runs around the entire circumference of the die.
