Obverse description Central field bearing the crowned Portuguese royal arms, displayed as a quartered shield incorporating the five escutcheons of Portugal with roundels arranged in quincunx pattern. The shield is surmounted by a royal crown rendered in a stylized manner consistent with hammered coinage of the period. No mint letters or the D-T mintmaster monogram appear on this variety, distinguishing it from related issues. The die work is typical of colonial Ceylonese mint production under Philip II, with irregular flan edges characteristic of hand-struck pieces.
