Obverse description Royal coat of arms of Portugal surmounted by a crown, centrally displayed in the field. The shield is flanked by the mint letters G to the left and A to the right, indicating the Goa mint. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded inner circle, typical of hammered coinage of the period. The arms display the characteristic Portuguese quartered arrangement with the quinas and castles, rendered in the crude but distinctive style of the Goa hammered silver issues.
