Reverse description A gridiron, the symbol of Saint Lawrence, depicted centrally with vertical bars and a horizontal crosspiece, serving as the principal device. The date is split across the field, with '16' to the left and '44' to the right of the gridiron. The design is executed in the hammered tradition, with a beaded or dotted border encircling the reverse field. This gridiron motif is a characteristic and recurring type on Portuguese colonial tanga coinage issued for Ceylon.
