Samoa's participation in the WWF's 25th anniversary coin program in 1986 placed it among dozens of nations that issued wildlife-themed pieces under a coordinated conservation fundraising initiative. A portion of proceeds from the series was directed to the World Wildlife Fund directly, making these among the earlier examples of a coin issue functioning as a charitable instrument. Tanumafili II, who co-headed state with Malietoa Tanumafili II until his death in 2007, lent his name to Samoan coinage throughout one of the Pacific's longer continuous leadership tenures.
