The 1983 South Pacific Games were hosted by Western Samoa in Apia — the first time the nation had taken on that role. Striking a commemorative for the occasion made political sense; the country had only shed its UN trusteeship status in 1962 and was still finding occasions to assert its place among Pacific nations. Tanumafili II, who would go on to become the world's first head of state to convert to the Bahá'í Faith, was by 1983 well into his tenure as co-Head of State following the death of Tupua Tamasese Meaʻole in 1963.
