Piedforts of this type were produced primarily for collectors and official presentation purposes, struck at double the standard planchet thickness using the same dies as the circulation issue. Samoa's 1984 piedfort program was modest in scope — these were not widely distributed and saw no commercial release through normal numismatic channels. Malietoa Tanumafili II had assumed office in 1962 at independence and would remain head of state until his death in 2007, making him one of the longest-serving heads of state of the twentieth century. The KM#P1 designation confirms this as the first piedfort recorded for Samoa in the standard reference.
