| Obverse description | At center, the colorized coat of arms of Ecuador is superimposed upon a soccer ball rendered in the field. The legend REPUBLICA DEL ECUADOR arcs along the upper rim, while the fineness mark L.0.925 appears to the left and the weight 27 GR. to the right. The denomination UN SUCRE is inscribed along the lower rim. The overall design combines color printing with a struck silver planchet. |

Ecuador's qualification for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar was immediately overshadowed by a FIFA eligibility investigation into defender Byron Castillo, which threatened to strip the country of its place entirely. Chile and Peru both filed formal complaints. Ecuador survived the challenge and competed — making this commemorative issue, authorized by the Banco Central, a record of an episode that nearly didn't happen.
The denomination itself is anachronistic: Ecuador abandoned the sucre in 2000 during a catastrophic banking collapse, fully dollarizing the economy. Collector issues in sucres have no monetary function, a legal fiction the central bank has quietly maintained for numismatic purposes ever since.
