Leyba & Co. was a commercial trading house operating in Curaçao, issuing private token coinage to manage small-denomination transactions in a colonial economy chronically starved of official small change. The Dutch government was slow to supply adequate subsidiary coinage to its Caribbean territories, and private merchants routinely filled the gap. These tokens circulated with de facto acceptance far beyond the issuing firm's own transactions.
The 1874 date places this squarely in a period of significant mercantile activity in Willemstad's Punda district.
