| Obverse description | A long cross with anchor-shaped tips occupies the full face, with the crowned Imperial arms of Charles V at the center intersection, dividing a beaded inner circle. The arms are set within an inscribed quadrilobe formed by the arms of the cross. A continuous Latin legend runs along the outer margin. The overall design reflects the late medieval Burgundian-Habsburg heraldic tradition typical of Low Countries coinage of this period. |

Charles V acquired Guelders in 1543 after defeating Duke William the Rich, ending a prolonged struggle that had seen the duchy play French and Habsburg factions against each other for decades. This stiver belongs to the first wave of coinage issued under Habsburg authority, struck during the brief window before Guelders was formally absorbed into the Seventeen Provinces under the Pragmatic Sanction of 1549.
Billon coinage of this type circulated heavily in the Low Countries market economy and survives almost exclusively in well-worn condition as a result.
