Additional information

Frederik III had consolidated absolute monarchy in Denmark-Norway just five years before this coin was struck, the 1660 coup against the nobility reshaping the constitutional order entirely. The speciedaler was the prestige denomination of that new regime — a heavy silver coin issued in relatively small numbers, intended as much for display of royal authority as for commerce. Norway at this point had no mint of its own; these pieces were struck in Copenhagen.

Rønning 47a distinguishes a specific die pairing within the 1665 emission. Survivors in problem-free condition are scarce.
