| Obverse description | Bare-headed young effigy of Queen Victoria facing left, the hair drawn back in undulating waves and gathered into a coiled bun at the nape, secured by a fillet — the so-called 'Young Head' portrait engraved by William Wyon. The truncation of the neck is plain and unadorned. The date 1853 appears in the lower field beneath the portrait. The encircling Latin legend is interrupted by beaded inner and outer borders, with dot separators between abbreviated words. |
