Obverse description Half-length effigy of King James I facing right, wearing an ornate imperial crown and richly decorated armour chased with intricate strapwork. The king holds a sceptre over his right shoulder and an orb surmounted by a cross in his left hand, both rendered in fine relief. The royal mantle with ermine collar is draped about the shoulders, conveying regal authority. The legend encircles the effigy within a beaded inner border, with the mint mark preceding the inscription at upper left.

Reverse description A large quartered royal shield of arms, surmounted by a elaborate imperial crown, occupies the centre of the field. The quarters display the arms of England (three passant guardant lions) and Scotland (a rampant lion) impaled in the first and fourth quarters, France ancient (fleurs-de-lis) in the second, and Ireland (a harp) in the third. The royal cypher 'I R' (Jacobus Rex) flanks the shield to left and right respectively. The circumferential legend, separated by a pellet, runs within a beaded border.
