Alderney, the smallest of the main Channel Islands with a population under 2,000, has no independent monetary authority of its own — its coins are legal tender in name but issued under license and never circulate in any meaningful sense. The Platinum Jubilee sovereign format was adopted by several Crown Dependencies in 2022 to mark Elizabeth II's 70 years on the throne, a reign that began the year Alderney had fewer than 1,500 residents. She died on September 8th of that same year, making this a jubilee issue that became memorial within months of striking.
