Additional information

This piece was struck by Pobjoy Mint under contract rather than at the Royal Mint — an arrangement that reflected the Isle of Man's distinct issuing authority, which had produced its own sovereign-format coins since 1973. The Maklouf effigy, introduced across Commonwealth coinage in 1985, appears here in one of its earliest years of use. Pobjoy's sovereign-format issues from this period were produced for both collector and bullion markets, and the four crowned shields reverse was specific to the Manx series rather than the standard UK type.
