Gibraltar's sovereign program has issued commemorative pieces under royal license since the 1970s, operating independently of the Royal Mint and free to use the sovereign format for subjects beyond the strictly traditional. This piece marks the 2021 date — a decade after William and Catherine's April 2011 Westminster Abbey wedding.
The underlying coin format traces to the 1817 Great Recoinage under Lord Liverpool, which standardized the modern sovereign's weight and fineness — specifications Gibraltar has faithfully maintained here.
