Additional information

The Revestment Act of 1765 ended the purchase of the feudal rights of the Stanley family — the Lords of Man — by the British Crown, bringing the island's customs revenues under Westminster control and effectively ending centuries of near-autonomous governance. The Isle of Man marked the 200th anniversary of that transfer with this coin, one of the earliest modern commemorative sovereigns issued outside the United Kingdom itself. The Manx government's authority to issue its own coinage, retained even after Revestment, made the piece legally and politically possible.
