Additional information

Alderney has no mint of its own and issues coins as a Crown Dependency collectible rather than circulating currency — these are legal tender in name only, struck under license and sold directly to collectors at a premium. The Saint George and Dragon sovereign format traces back to Benedetto Pistrucci's design commissioned for the Great Recoinage of 1817, making it one of the longest-running continuous reverse designs in British coinage history. Pistrucci himself, an Italian gem engraver, was never granted British citizenship yet his work outlasted every subsequent attempt to replace it.
