| Additional information |
Alderney sits roughly 50 miles off the English coast and was the only permanently inhabited British territory occupied by German forces during the Second World War — its civilian population had been almost entirely evacuated in June 1940. The island's proximity to the Normandy beaches, barely 60 miles away, gives it a geographic claim to D-Day commemoration that most issuing authorities manufacturing similar coins simply do not have.
