Additional information

The Act of Union 1800 merged Great Britain and Ireland into the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland effective 1 January 1801, a political consolidation driven largely by British anxiety following the Irish Rebellion of 1798 and its French-backed dimensions. Tristan da Cunha, a dependency administered through St. Helena, issues commemorative sovereigns through agreements with the Royal Mint and private minters — its coins hold legal tender status on the island, though the resident population of roughly 250 people has little practical use for gold specie.
