The design depicts a crowned Queen Elizabeth, II effigy based on photography from her coronation in 1953, poised next to her protector and companion - the Lion. The concept for Elizabeth and the Lion was greatly inspired by the captivating story and history of Una and the Lion - originally struck as a five sovereign piece to mark the reign of Queen Victoria in 1837. The inscription featured, is also inspired by William Wyon`s Una and the Lion.
