The somoni was introduced in 2000 to replace the Tajik ruble, itself a short-lived currency that had substituted for Soviet rubles following independence in 1991. The denomination honors Ismoil Somoni, the 9th-century Samanid ruler who presided over a Persian cultural and literary renaissance centered in what is now Central Asia. The "Aryens" designation on this issue references the broader Aryan heritage narrative that the Tajik government has actively promoted since independence — a pointed assertion of ethnic and civilizational identity distinct from Turkic neighbors.
