| Obverse description | Frontal bust of Emperor Justinian I, helmeted and cuirassed, facing directly toward the viewer in the Byzantine imperial style. The emperor holds a spear over his right shoulder and bears a decorated shield adorned with a horseman motif at his left side. The bust is rendered in a stylized, hieratic manner characteristic of Ostrogothic imitations of Byzantine coinage struck at Ravenna. A pearl diadem and elaborate helmet crown the head. The encircling legend reads D N IVSTINIANVS P F AVG in Latin capitals. |
