Obverse description Frontal helmeted and cuirassed bust of Emperor Justinian I, pearl-diademed, with a spear held over the right shoulder, rendered in the late antique Byzantine imperial style. The effigy is contained within a beaded border, enclosed by the surrounding Latin legend in the field. The portrait conveys the conventional idealized imperial image rather than a personal likeness, characteristic of Ostrogothic solidi struck in the name of the Eastern emperor. Fine granular die work is evident in the rendering of the helmet and cuirass detail.
Obverse script Latin
Obverse lettering D N IVSTINI – ANVS PF AVC
(Translation: Dominus Noster Justinian Perpetuus Augustus Our Lord, Justinian, perpetual August)
