Obverse description Central device depicting the Visconti linchpin (chiavistello) and the Sforza flint-and-steel (focile) superimposed, surmounted by an imperial crown. The design elements are rendered in the characteristic crude hammered style of Milanese billon coinage of the period. The circular legend reading CAROLVS V surrounds the central device, interrupted by pellet stops. The flat, irregular flan is typical of mid-sixteenth-century Milanese small denomination issues struck under Charles V as Holy Roman Emperor and Duke of Milan.

Reverse description A bold foliate cross with elaborate floral or leafy terminals at each arm fills the central field, dividing the reverse into four quadrants. The cross arms are decorated with foliage or trefoil ornaments, characteristic of Milanese soldo coinage of the Sforza-Habsburg period. The circular legend RO IMPERATOR surrounds the cross, with pellet stops separating the words. The overall composition is typical of the ornate but crudely struck billon small denominations produced at the Milan mint under Charles V.
