Additional information

The "Victory of the 2nd of May" commemorates the 1866 Battle of Callao, in which Peruvian and Chilean forces jointly repelled a Spanish naval squadron attempting to reassert colonial influence in South America — Spain's last serious military adventure on the Pacific coast. The engagement is celebrated in Peru as a definitive assertion of independence from the former metropole, over four decades after political separation had already been declared.

The series KM#399 sits in a long Peruvian tradition of silver commemoratives issued through the BCRP to mark military anniversaries rather than circulate.
