Issued as part of Peru's "Riqueza y Orgullo del Perú" (Wealth and Pride of Peru) coin program, which the Banco Central de Reserva launched to highlight the country's biodiversity across a multi-year series. The spectacled bear — Tremarctos ornatus — is the only bear species native to South America and the sole surviving member of the short-faced bear subfamily, once widespread across the Americas during the Pleistocene.
Collector demand for the series has been steady domestically, though individual issues rarely circulated in quantity once the program gained recognition.
