Obverse description The quartered shield of the Republic and Canton of Geneva occupies the central field, displaying a crowned eagle rampant to the left in the dexter half and an upright key in the sinister half, emblematic of the city's traditional heraldry. A radiant sun with straight and wavy rays issues from the top of the field above the shield, a celebrated Genevan civic emblem. The circular peripheral legend REP. ET CANTON DE GENEVE runs along the border, separated from the central device by a plain inner rim. The coin is struck with a milled or reeded outer border. The engraving is bold and well-defined in the early nineteenth-century Swiss cantonal style.
