| Additional information |
Potosí had been minting silver under Spanish colonial authority for over two and a half centuries when the independence movement forced a peculiar administrative situation: the mint changed hands multiple times between royalist and patriot forces between 1810 and 1825. This 1815 issue was struck under royalist control, yet bears republican iconography — a consequence of the patriots having introduced new dies the previous year before losing the city back to crown forces, who continued using the existing equipment.
The .896 fineness reflects a deliberate reduction from colonial-era standards, a compromise driven by wartime silver supply disruptions in the Andean mining sector.
