Sánchez Carrión was the Peruvian statesman who, more than perhaps any other figure, argued successfully against monarchy in the early republic — his 1822 letters under the pseudonym "El Solitario de Sayán" directly shaped the constitutional debate that kept Peru from crowning a king. The coin was issued as part of Peru's ongoing "Riqueza y Orgullo del Perú" commemorative circulation series, which the BCRP has used since the early 2000s to rotate historical and natural subjects through the standard one-sol format.
He died in 1825, just months after independence was secured, aged around 35.
