This coin is part of Peru's "Riqueza y Orgullo del Perú" circulation commemorative program, a long-running Banco Central initiative issuing themed 1 Sol pieces into general circulation rather than as collector sets. The Cabeza de Vaca — literally "cow's head" — is a pre-Columbian gold ornament recovered from the Sicán culture of the Lambayeque region, dating to roughly 900–1100 AD. Sicán metallurgists alloyed gold with arsenic-copper to achieve a distinctive surface color, a technique so sophisticated it remained poorly understood by researchers until late-twentieth-century spectrographic analysis.
