Additional information

Gustav IV Adolf's reign ended in humiliation — he was deposed by coup in 1809 after leading Sweden into catastrophic military losses, including the surrender of Finland to Russia. These copper skillings were struck in the years before that unraveling, when Swedish finances were already under strain from the Napoleonic Wars and the costs of maintaining a credible coinage in base metal had become a persistent administrative headache for the Riksbank.
