Additional information

Christian IV's skilling coinage of the 1620s was produced against the backdrop of his costly interventions in the Thirty Years' War — a series of campaigns that drained the Danish treasury and forced repeated debasements of small-denomination billon. The .156 fineness of this piece reflects exactly that pressure. By the time Denmark formally withdrew from the conflict in 1629 after defeat at the Battle of Lutter, the monetary damage was already done.
