Obverse description At center, a crowned shield bearing the quartered arms of Denmark is set within a beaded inner circle. A long-armed cross extends behind the shield, its arms radiating into the four quadrants and effectively dividing the surrounding Latin legend into four segments. The lettering, rendered in Gothic characters, reads CHRIS · TIANV · S·3·D:G · DANIE, abbreviating the royal style of Christian III, King of Denmark by the Grace of God. The overall design is characteristic of mid-sixteenth-century Northern European hammered coinage, with an irregular flan and bold, deeply struck relief.
