The Altona mint, operating under Danish royal authority on the outskirts of Hamburg, struck copper skillings for Christian VII throughout a reign increasingly dominated by the king's severe mental illness. By the early 1770s, effective power had passed almost entirely to Johann Friedrich Struensee, the royal physician who issued over a thousand cabinet orders in roughly eighteen months before his arrest and execution in 1772. Coinage production at Altona continued without interruption through the political upheaval — copper for everyday commerce waits for no coup.
