| Obverse description | Armored and crowned bust of Emperor Charles V facing right, rendered in a bold, late-medieval style characteristic of Habsburg portraiture. The emperor wears an elaborately decorated cuirass and an imperial crown with prominent fleurs-de-lis. The effigy is set against a flat field with the legend arranged around the periphery in two lines, beginning at the upper right. The lettering is in a Gothic-influenced Roman script typical of mid-sixteenth-century Low Countries coinage. |

| Reverse description | Quartered shield of Austria-Burgundy displaying the arms of Castile, Leon, Aragon, and the Burgundian lion, topped by a crowned imperial helmet with elaborate mantling and flanked by the chain of the Order of the Golden Fleece. The shield is superimposed upon an ornate floriated cross that divides the field into four quadrants. Small heraldic devices or mintmarks appear in the angles of the cross. The circular legend runs continuously around the periphery, separated from the inner design by a beaded border. |
