Reverse description Cruciform arrangement of the four crowned shields of arms — England, Scotland, France, and Ireland — disposed in the quarters of a cross, with the crowned cypher of William III (interlinked WW) at the center intersection. Each shield is finely detailed and set within a beaded inner border. The date 1696 or 1697 is divided across the upper field flanking the English shield, and the York mint mark 'y' appears in the legend. The circumscribed Latin legend MAG BR FRA ET HIB REX encircles the design, identifying William as King of Great Britain, France, and Ireland.
