Reverse description A crowned wreath of roses, thistles, and shamrocks encircles the denomination ONE SHILLING in two lines at the centre of the field. A royal crown surmounts the wreath at top, and the date appears in the exergue below. On dies issued from 1864 onward, a die number is positioned above the date. The design was engraved by Jean Baptiste Merlen and retains a clean, symmetrical composition throughout the series.
