Obverse description The central field displays the Coat of Arms of Kenya, featuring a Maasai shield flanked by two rampant lions serving as supporters, with crossed spears behind the shield and a traditional Kenyan cockerel at the crest. A decorative scroll below the shield bears the national motto HARAMBEE. The date 1994 is divided by the shield, appearing to either side at the mid-field, while the denomination ONE SHILLING is inscribed along the lower legend in large letters.
