Obverse description Right-facing crowned and draped bust of King James I occupying the central field, rendered in the characteristic style of the second coinage fourth bust type. The king is depicted wearing an elaborately engraved armoured breastplate with a ruffled collar visible at the neck, and a jewelled crown upon his head. The Roman numeral XII, denoting the denomination of twelve pence, appears to the left of the bust in the inner field. The circumferential Latin legend, separated from the central device by a beaded inner circle, reads IACOBVS D G MAG BRIT FRA ET HIB REX, proclaiming James as King of Great Britain, France, and Ireland by the grace of God.
